PONTEFRACT LIQUORICE FESTIVAL - AS289
& Harewood House
The historic town of Pontefract, with it's cobbled streets and Norman castle, is rightly proud to celebrate it's association with this famous plant from the Middle East. It may have been bought to Pontefract from the Crusades, by a member of the De Lacy family who built Pontefract Castle, or perhaps by the Benedictine monks who came to the town in 1090. However it arrived, it's initial importance was as a medicine, and only in the last few hundred years has it been turned into a sweet - the famous Pontefract Cake.

The festival is held throughout the town centre, with street entertainment, craft, and of course food & drink stalls featuring liquorice delicacies from sweets to ale, all adding to the carnival atmosphere.

TORQUAY WINTER WARMER - 5 Days - AS135

Torquay with its mild climate and sub-tropical plants & trees has that exotic “Riviera” feeling. In the centre of town the large pedestrianized shopping centre has many famous High Street stores, whilst the harbour and marina area are great for a stroll.
